All About Juice Cleanses!

Happy Tuesday beautiful people!

I am sure you have noticed that I have been M.I.A. from the blogosphere for the past 4 months, and this is purely based on the fact that I allowed myself to get slightly overwhelmed with school and all the assignments and lesson plans that come with it. I was always tired and stressed out, so unfortunately blogging took a back seat in the priority department! However, I have decided to include blogging more as one of my resolutions for 2015, so hopefully you will be seeing much more frequent posts from blonde vegan hippie.

Since we just started a brand new year, less than 2 weeks ago, I thought I would talk to you about juice cleansing! Juice bars are popping up all over the place, offering vibrant and delicious juice combinations like apple-beet-carrot-ginger or orange-grapefruit-pineapple-mint! YUM! Juice cleanses fit nicely into this juice craze. It seems like everyone and their mothers are participating in juice cleanses to reset their bodies. So what are the benefits of juice cleansing?

Colorful juices with an assortment of raw ingredients

  1. Rest the stomach: Juicing requires less of the stomach’s digestive processing, which means the stomach doesn’t have to work as hard to extract the nutrients.
  2. Rest and repair the gut: Toxic foods, taking medications and even stress can impair the intestine’s functioning. By consuming a nutrient-dense plant-based juice diet will allow food to be assimilated quickly through the intestine – using less energy, while toxin-free, nutrient-dense food helps to repair the gut.
  3. Rest the liver: Did you know the liver is the main detoxifying organ? Every molecule of food that is absorbed through the intestinal wall moves into the liver for detoxification and preparation before being allowed to enter the rest of the body. Unfortunately, there are too many toxins for most of our livers to handle, which is why an organic juice cleanse will reset the liver’s overload.
  4. Improve energy: Once you move past the first day’s adjustment period, most people begin to feel much more energy and mental clarity!
  5. Re-hydrate the body: Most people do not consume adequate fluids, often consuming diuretics such as coffee or tea as their main beverages. Drinking a sufficient amount of fluids (5-6 glasses per day) will make the body function much more efficiently, and help ensure proper elimination of toxins.
  6. Allow for maximum detoxification: In order to optimally support all phases of the body’s natural detox process, you will need to consume a very broad range of plant-based nutrients such as antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.When you provide your body with nutrient-dense foods, juicing allows the body to have more of the resources needed to support the various phases of detoxification.

My 3-day Juice Cleanse:

Just before Halloween, I decided to do my very first juice cleanse! I work at OmJuice, a vegan juice and smoothie bar, so finding someone to supply me with a plethora of juices was the easy part! I chose to do the 3-day juice cleanse, since it was my first time doing a cleanse of this capacity. This particular juice cleanse included 5 juices and 1 nut mylk, which were all pretty spectacular. Every morning, I started my day with room temperature lemon water, followed by a hot cup of peppermint tea.

Juice 1: Green Machine – If the name didn’t give it away, this juice is definitely green! It is also my favourite green juice from the cleanse. This juice is made with kale, cucumber, apple, ginger, lemon and cayenne pepper. It may sound like an odd combination with the cayenne, but it really is delicious!

Juice 2: Rehab – This one is a favourite for OmJuice customers and yet another green juice! It is made with kale, cucumber, apple, ginger, and ginseng.

Juice 3: Liver Flush – A vibrant red juice, packed with beets, carrots, apples and a subtle hint of ginger. To be honest, this juice scared me because I felt that it might taste too earthy but it ended up being one of my favourite juices from the cleanse.

Juice 4: Detox – A spicy blend of apple, lemon and ginger, topped up with filtered water and completed with several dashes of cayenne pepper! This juice made me nervous because I was afraid it would be too spicy but it turned out to be delicious and was hands down my favourite juice of the cleanse!

Juice 5: Mother Earth – Another super green juice full of kale, cucumber, celery and lemon! Although this juice may sound intimidating, it is absolutely delicious. It is a great juice to end the day with because it makes you feel clean and light, yet oddly full!

Juice 6: Spiced Almond Mylk – Juice #6 isn’t juice at all, but instead is a delicious, creamy almond nut mylk, spiced with cinnamon, vanilla and dates. This was such a rewarding treat at the end of a long day! I could honestly drink this spiced nut mylk all day, every day, that just goes to show how tasty this bad boy is!
** Cashew milk is also available is you have allergies to almonds **

The first day of my juice cleanse was the most difficult. I found myself slightly hungry and I really missed chewing my food. By the end of day 1, I was revealed that 1/3 days had been completed. However, days 2 and 3 were much easier! I actually felt full, I could go longer than 2 hours between juices, I wasn’t bloated and I definitely had more energy than normal! I even lost 2 lbs during my 3-day cleanse, which was unexpected as I never intended to lose weight while juicing.

Overall, I really enjoyed my first juice cleanse experience and I have to thank OmJuice for the delicious juices + nut mylk over those 3 days! I would certainly do another juice cleanse, maybe when Spring rolls around because right now I am loving raw til 4, and having my warm, cooked meals for dinner. For anyone living in the GTA, you can contact OmJuice via Facebook for more information about the cleanses they offer. Now go forth, and reset your body with a nutrient-dense juice cleanse!

Healthy Tip Tuesday – Canned vs. Dried Beans

Amazing information on canned vs. dried beans by my girlfriend Kate, over at the http://www.thevegatarian.wordpress.com!!

I’ve decided to start a weekly tips post on both my Instagram and the blog. I’ve found since I made the life change to a more raw food vegan lifestyle many of my friends and family are beginning to ask me questions about certain foods, nutrients and health overall. I will provide tips on basic health food knowledge, that really anyone can find out on their own with a bit of research. Hopefully it will help some people answer their questions and make more informed and healthy choices.

I went to the farmer’s market this weekend and picked up three large bags of various dried organic beans. I had a conversation with one of my friends about purchasing dried beans over canned and it got me thinking that a lot of people are probably under the impression that canned beans are the exact same as dried, except dried beans take ‘forever’ to…

Toronto Vegetarian Fest – 30th Anniversary

Hey there pretty little thing,

This past weekend a magical thing happened and that magical thing was the 30th Toronto Vegetarian Festival! With almost 2 years under my belt as a vegan, and missing last year’s festival, I was beyond thrilled to be attending the Veg Fest this year! I spent all day Saturday and the majority of Sunday at the festival sampling new products, talking to vendors, eating amazing vegan food, catching up with friends and meeting some amazing people like @thevegankitty @thevegatarian @fruitupp @peacelovegreenjuice @prettylod and @tony_m_g! I was also fortunate enough to attend one of the screenings of Cowspiracy, a new documentary on sustainability, our environment and a push towards a plant based diet, as well as meet the film director, Kip Andersen! I had such an amazing time and I’m already counting down the days until next years festival!

Back to School | Meal Prep

TGIF beautiful people!

I’ve been fairly busy these past few weeks, as I started Teachers College two weeks ago and have been trying to get back into the routine of being back in school and all the work that comes with it! With that being said, being busy or overwhelmed should not be an excuse to eat unhealthy foods. I have made the choice to take an hour every single night, in order to prep all of my food for the following day. It certainly takes a large chunk of time to do, but it is definitely worth it as it allows my mornings to run smoothly and I know that I’ll be eating healthy all day long!

Without fail, since the day I started Teachers College, someone (sometimes multiple people) asks me what is in my smoothies. Those questions are usually followed by ‘Wow. You are really healthy” 😉 I absolutely LOVE when people stop me to ask what I’m drinking or eating, or how I made something. It allows me to share a part of myself with others that I am so passionate about and it also shows others how easy it is to be and stay healthy!

I have compiled several images of my meal preparation to share with all of you, and hopefully inspire all of you to take some time out of your day to meal prep some healthy and delicious food!

Vegan Spotlight | Samantha Pilkington

The Vegan Spotlight series is back in full effect my friends! After a month hiatus from blogging, I am so happy to be showing blondeveganhippie some love again and to be sharing some amazing vegan babes with you. Today’s Vegan Spotlight features one of my favourite ladies, Samantha Pilkington, who is the biggest gem I know!

sam (1)

Tell everyone a little bit about yourself:

My name is Sam, I’m 22 years old, and I was born and raised in Noosa, QLD, Australia. I have a gorgeous rescue doggy called Bonnie and I study Chinese and International Relations at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.

Tell us about your journey to veganism.

I’ve written a blog post about this as quite a few people on my Instagram had asked why I decided to go vegan.

“While I was brought up eating meat on the odd occasion, my family has mostly eaten fresh food and minimal meat my whole life. My sister and I were raised to love and care for the environment around us, which contained a lot of wildlife as I grew up in a house that sits in between Noosa National Park and the beach. While this upbringing has engrained an element of environmental consciousness into my way of life, it is not necessarily the reason for me choosing to become vegan.

Initially, I went vegan literally because I thought it was cool. At the time, I was admittedly pretty obsessed with my self image, and veganism hadn’t quite taken off as a well-known trend at the time, and I thought being vegan before it was “mainstream” was a really good way to boost my self-image. Kind of lame, but it’s the most honest answer I can give, and it really shows how much I’ve grown as a person between then and now.

I was vegan for about a year, but I wasn’t particularly sensible about it and began to lose a lot of weight (this was initially unintentional). I was a pretty shallow person at the time and kind of liked the attention I was getting about losing two dress sizes (I dropped from an AUS size 8 to a 4). I started controlling my diet even more than I already had been, and ended up losing a total of 13kg and I started to worry my friends and family with my behaviour.

It took a little while, but I eventually realised how shallow and hurtful my behaviour was, not only to myself and my friends and family, but also to the vegan/ cruelty free community. Using the excuse that I didn’t believe in harming animals, and that “animals are not our slaves” to hide an eating disorder is completely and utterly selfish and undermining to the ideologies behind veganism. Not a proud moment in the life of Sam.

In an effort to gain my health back I went back to eating animal products (I wasn’t as knowledgeable at the time about how healthy you can be on a vegan diet). And then about four months ago I started reading/ researching about veganism on various blogs, and one of my subjects at uni touched on the implications of farming on the environment and society, and decided to give veganism another shot, but this time I would do it for the RIGHT reasons, and I would take careful measures to ensure my health would benefit this time from my decisions.

I apologise if this is kind of rushed/ brief! I’m currently up to my ears in exam prep but I wanted to share this as I feel I learned SO MUCH about myself and the world around me through my experience in becoming vegan. One thing to take away from this is to really think about your personal values, and only make decisions based on what you TRULY believe in, not what you think other people might like, envy or respect you for. This is YOUR LIFE and at the end of the day, you have to be happy within yourself with the decisions you make and the way you choose to live” –  http://samanthapilk.tumblr.com/post/87662602834/why-i-became-vegan

sam (3)

What is the most difficult thing about being vegan?

I used to think that having to explain/ justify to non vegans why I took on veganism was the hardest thing about being vegan. But I actually think that dealing with (some) other vegans and their attitude can be more problematic. There are some vegans who don’t seem to want, or think it is appropriate, to share with others thoughts and experiences regarding veganism. Veganism to some people has almost become a trend that they feel they need to ‘protect’ from becoming mainstream.  I have copped some judgement and harsh remarks from some of these people in response to my openness about being vegan. But in reality, don’t you think it would be wonderful if more and more people opened their eyes to more ethical and kind ways of living that veganism has to offer? It just upsets me a little bit that some vegans get on their alternative high horse and claim veganism as being ‘their thing’ and that they ‘discovered it first’ etc.

If you had one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Pumpkin, kale and chickpea soup.

What are your top 3 vegan restaurants? What is your favourite meal from all 3?

I’m a poor uni student so I don’t get to explore too many restaurants! But Tea Master in Fortitude Valley is fun because their fake chicken tastes creepily real…

sam (4)sam

Do you find it difficult to travel as a vegan? Can you share some tips on how to overcome challenges of traveling as a vegan?

I haven’t traveled overseas as a vegan! But I was fed cat once in Vanuatu when I thought it was something else so I think you’ve just got to be assertive, but also polite when explaining your dietary requirements in some places. My main tip is to not be too fussy and to look at the big picture whilst travelling. While being vegan is a great thing, if you are accidentally served a non-vegan dish perhaps consider not wasting it by sending it back to the restaurant kitchen, especially if you are travelling somewhere with high poverty rates, that would just be undermining one cause to serve another.

What is one recipe you make that no-one believes is vegan?

Meringue pie! I use egg replacement instead and it’s unbelievable!

Name your favourite cruelty free personal care products and why you love them!

Sukin face wash and body wash. It smells amazing and is really cheap!

sam (2)

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years? Be elaborate!

I’m still not sure, but I know I’ll be writing about social and environmental justice issues, and hopefully lots of people will be reading them!

I mainly want to focus on areas of slave labour and unethical production. I also want to contribute to change in the way Australia deals with asylum seekers as I am strongly opposed to the cruel refugee policies we have.

How do you feel about dating non vegans?

I’ve dated both a vegan and a non vegan before, and I don’t think it affected the relationship either way. I’m not sure if it will matter to me in the future or not, I’ll have to wait and see about it.

What advice would you give others who are considering going vegan?

Do it! You’ll feel so much healthier without all that dairy and animal fat in your body! Just make sure you get amongst heaps of protein (chickpeas, lentils etc) and iron (kale!!!!!). And Bonsoy is the only soy milk that doesn’t taste like poo.

sam (5)

Vegan Travels | Looking Back

Hello lovelies,

SO good to be back home and to be blogging again! I sure have missed you precious gems!
As many of you know, I was in Portugal for 3.5 from the middle of July to the middle of August, and returned almost 2 weeks ago now. I am so thankful to have gotten the opportunity to travel to the country that both my parents were born in, and to have done so with my best friend and her wonderful family and extended family. It was a trip filled with great food, sunshine, sand beneath my toes, salty beach hair, sangria and mojitos, dancing, laughing, reading, exploring, surfing and plenty of good ol’ family time.

I want to show all of you exactly what a vegan eats while on vacation for almost 4 weeks and just how easy it is to access vegan foods in a foreign country! Sadly, I did not remain gluten free while I was on my trip but that’s okay! To me, remaining vegan is my main focus at any given time. Although my body responds better on a gluten free diet and I prefer naturally gluten free foods (fruits, vegetables, quinoa, brown rice, etc.), exceptions needs to be made sometimes and Portugal was certainly my exception! I had more bread than probably every single day, sometimes several times a day. I am not saying it is not possible to stay on a gluten free diet while travelling, what I am saying is I definitely did not try hard enough to keep that aspect of my diet haha oops.

If you want to see all the delicious vegan eats I enjoyed while in Portugal, make sure to scroll all the way down to see all the photos!

Vegan Travels | Portugal 2014

Hello radiant human beings 🙂
If you follow me on Instagram then you already know that I am leaving to Portugal in less than 24 hours… This means that I won’t be posting anything on the blog until I am back from vacation, because I will be leaving my laptop at home! I promise to come home with plenty of pictures and stories about travelling as a vegan for you guys!

This will be my second time travelling as a vegan, my first time being last summer when I traveled to Belize. Traveling as a vegan can be tough, depending on where in the world you are going as some places aren’t as vegan-friendly as others. Although veganism is making headlines everywhere and more and more places are adapting vegan options, it is extremely important to be well prepared when traveling as a vegan – especially if it is your first time!

portugal

  • Dried mangoes

  • Oatmeal packets

photo

To me, it is very important to have snacks on hand when I am out and about during the day. I need to eat every several hours, so having something small like dried fruit or rice cakes is really helpful! It is also a great way to save some money while you are out during the day, so you aren’t constantly stopping to grab something to eat!

Also remember to do your research before traveling to a foreign country! Check out http://www.happycow.net (or download their app) to see what restaurants around your hotel are vegan or vegan-friendly. It will make your daily meals much less stressful when you know that there are options that fit your lifestyle!

If you are vegan, vegetarian or have any dietary restriction, remember to think about your flight as well! Although you can request specific meals prior to your flight, most airplane food won’t suit your palate. This is why I ensure that I have a few snacks on hand in my carry-on during a flight! Right now, I have Quinoa crunchies, dried mangoes, raw buckwheat snacks and organic grapes ready to take with me on my carry-on tomorrow evening. Since my flight isn’t until 10:00pm, I will be eating a small meal before leaving to the airport as well as grabbing dinner after I’ve checked in my luggage. I googled “vegan options” at my local airport and found a great little place that offers organic, gluten free, vegan, kosher, etc. options so that is definitely where I’ll be getting dinner from tomorrow night!

Personally, I think traveling as a vegan is a lot easier than many people make it out to be. As long as you are prepared and have done your research, your vacation should run smoothly! Just be cautious of language barriers! If you aren’t travelling with someone who speaks the native language, then it is best that you learn words like “meat”, “fish”, “dairy”, “eggs”, “animal products”, “vegetarian” and “vegan” before your trip! Carrying around a pocket sized dictionary won’t hurt either 😉

Talk to you beautiful people in a few weeks… Be kind to one another!

Love and Light,

blondeveganhippie

Vegan Spotlight – Brittany Allen

Here’s another Vegan Spotlight for all of you amazing people!

Today’s spotlight focuses on one of my favourite Aussie babes and very good friend, Brittany. She is one of the most amazing people I know and I’m so honoured to interview her as apart of my Vegan Spotlight interview series

     brittany (1)

Tell everyone a little bit about yourself!
My name is Brittany. I am 25 years old and I currently reside in the Blue Mountains in NSW, Australia. I am a green smoothie & juice advocate, book reader, homebody, passionate about healthy living and spirituality. You can find me on Instagram: @lentil_

Tell us about your journey to veganism!
I have been vegan for close to 10 months. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I have not look back since. My motivation for making the change to veganism came from watching a video online about factory farming. I wasn’t always an animal lover, but after seeing this video I lost all desire to consume animal products and since then I have grown such a powerful love, concern and passion for animal welfare and for my health.

What is the most difficult thing about being vegan?
The most difficult thing about being vegan is the criticism you receive from non vegans. I find it difficult to get through to people sometimes. There is only so much you can do and say because people will always choose to believe what they think is right for them. I try to lead by example by glorifying the health and environmental benefits whilst sharing information about animal rights. I have had to change my approach to sharing veganism quite a bit as people do not respond well to being ‘condemned’ and I was feeling a lot of negative energy in my life from the people who do not agree with my lifestyle. Since doing that it has been easier and more effective when I share recipes, pictures of my food and information about veganism.

brittany (2) brittany (3)

If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
One meal for the rest of my life… that is such a good but tough question. I think I would have to say: smoothies. I literally could live off smoothies. They are versatile and delicious and if the right ingredients are used they are so beneficial to your health. I try to have at least or both of a green smoothie and a green juice every day. They keep me full and satisfied and I feel amazing when I drink them.

What are you top 3 vegan restaurants? What is your favourite dish from each place?
Iku Wholefoods – they’re gluten free rice ball wrap with tahini dressing is AMAZING. I am also a huge fan of their lasagna.

Rubyfruit cafe – this place is fantastic. Their cheesecakes are amazing (turkish delight cheesecake… oh my gosh… enough said), and so are their burgers. Don’t even get me started on their hazelnut milkshakes…

Lord of the Fries – though this place isn’t 100% vegan they do have a lot of vegan alternatives and they are absolutely scrumptious. Great for a vegan junk food fix. My favourite dish is their parma burger.

Do you find it difficult to travel as a vegan? Can you share some tips on how to overcome the challenges of travelling as a vegan?
I haven’t experienced travelling as a vegan yet but if there is one thing I have learnt about being vegan in general is to be prepared. Always have something plant based with you to snack on when you are on the road or going somewhere where there may not be many vegan options. When I take a drive down to Sydney I make sure I have water and fruit to munch on on the way.

brittany (1) brittany (5)

What is one recipe you make that people can’t believe is vegan?
One of my favourite ‘hard to believe it’s vegan’ dishes to make is risotto. I don’t make it traditionally by slow boiling the rice, but I add in Tofutti cream cheese and vegetable stock and it gives it the beautiful, creamy, sticky consistency of traditional risotto. I also love to add meat free sausages to it. My friends also love my smoothies and ice cream and have commented on how creamy they are (the key – frozen banana).

Name your favourite cruelty free personal care products and why you love them!
I have really grown to love Lush cosmetics. I use their Vanillary solid perfume and their Ultrabalm daily. All their vegan products are clearly labelled and it makes shopping for beauty products really easy. Their soaps are absolutely divine as well.

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
In 5-10 years I see myself definitely still being vegan (obviously). I would like to possibly have a career in animal care and fulfilling passions I am yet to discover.

How do you feel about dating non-vegans?
Dating non vegans… hmmm… my most recent boyfriend wasn’t a vegan and I would be lying if I said that it didn’t present issues in our relationship. The ultimate would be to date a vegan but I am not opposed to dating omnivores. I think the most important thing when dating a non vegan is for that person to respect what you do and not try to tell you otherwise. There needs to be a healthy level of communication and understanding. I also think it leaves from for converting your non vegan partner to a more compassionate lifestyle 😉

What advice would you give others who considering going vegan?
Get as educated as you possibly can. Spend plenty of time researching. Find out what products you can avoid that are tested on animals. Experiment with food. Search for vegan alternatives. Learn about the impact a non vegan lifestyle has on you, animals, and the environment. Persevere. It may be challenging in the beginning but it is worth holding out for. Be proud of yourself for making such an important and beautiful decision!

THANK YOU Brittany for being so awesome and for being apart of Vegan Spotlight! You rock girlfriend.

Love and Light,
